Description
The Parcel 30 site is a historic lead/zinc milling operation in southern Arizona that was owned by ANAMAX Arizona, Inc., a 50/50 historical joint venture between AMAX Arizona, Inc. and Anaconda Arizona, Inc. The site was reclaimed and repurposed into an open space in 2023. Amax and Anaconda worked closely with the Town of Sahuarita to develop the site for use as a public park. As is typical for a reclamation project like Parcel 30, foundation materials and tailings associated with the former mill operation were consolidated and capped with an engineered cover system and a robust drainage system was constructed to manage stormwater. A Declaration of Environmental Use Restriction (DEUR) was also developed for the property and includes institutional and engineering controls. In addition to implementing this standard approach, numerous biodiversity, cultural, and education-related elements were incorporated into the project. These features include approximately two miles of trails with trailside benches, interpretive signs throughout the property, eight acres of pollinator gardens with agaves, bee blocks, and brush packs, numerous barrel cacti that were salvaged from the site prior to construction, three acres of native transplanted vegetation, including plants considered culturally significant to the Tohono O’odham Nation. Ramadas and traditional wa:tos (shade structure constructed by the Tohono O’odham using mesquite and ocotillo) were also constructed at the two parking areas. A church, school, aquatic center, and a residential development are located directly adjacent to the open space, so use of the property is expected to be significant.
